Stanley Paher points out that the Del Monte Hoist Works was located at this very location. Notice the image below and the contour of the mountain rising coincide with a picture taken about 1863. |
More trees can be seen from todays photos. Back during the time the mill was in operation, all the trees were cut and used as firewood or in the mines. This mill processed ore brought in from Aurora about 2 miles the other side of the mountain. Picture taken from: Nevada Ghost Towns & Mining Camps, by Stanley Paher. |

Twenty years after William Bodey was buried the townspeople decided to re-bury him in the town cemetery. A public service was held and in the ceremony it was stated that a shaft with an urn should be erected to the memory of Bodey. The shaft and urn were to catch the morning’s sunrise and capture the rays. The people of Bodie raised $500 and hired a sculpture to make the memorial. The town received word that President James A. Garfield was assinated and it was changed to comerate Garfield instead of Bodey. Inscribed on the monument is: Dedicated to James A. Garfield. Bodey was forgotten, and is buried in an unmarked grave outside of the cemetery. |
